House rehabilitation project immersed in the powerful scenery of Trás-os-Montes, Portugal. With strong use of colors that sometimes contrast and other times accentuate the landscape, this home, belonging to the same family for many generations and that presented a deep state of decay, was given a new life. This house now emerges in the landscape as a vibrant jewel surrounded by vines, orange and olive trees.
The project consisted in a global rehabilitation of the existing house resulting in a healthier structural and thermal performance and spatial distribution that allows for a more enjoyable living condition all year round (instead of the house being confortable for use only in the summertime as it had been the case in recent years due to infiltrations and general conditions of discomfort).
Some interventions were performed so as to preserve and highlight certain existing details around the house, such as the kitchen tiles that inspired the color used on the kitchen cabinets and other bedroom details. Other interventions were more heavy-handed and contrasting, such as the new living space composed of a wooden staircase and raised platform next to the smooth cement floor that brings back the blue color, present in other rooms, but in a more relevant fashion. With stonewalls painted white, two levels, and a privilege view of the landscape, this living space can transform from a cool summer space to a warm winter refuge.
